The Eames Plastic Chairs, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1950, embody their democratic design ideal: offer maximum value to as many people as possible at the most affordable cost. The result of a long research begun in the 1940s, these chairs were the first in design history to use a monobloc shell, molded to fit the human body. Launched on the market in the early 1950s, the Plastic Armchair (A-shell) and Plastic Side Chair (S-shell) Not only represented a technical innovation, but also introduced a revolutionary type of multifunctional chair, with a shell adaptable to different bases to meet different use needs.
Starting in 2024, Vitra has renewed this iconic collection with a more sustainable version, called the Eames Plastic Chair RE, made entirely of post-consumer recycled plastic. The choice of material involves slight chromatic variations, with small dots of pigment that enrich its aesthetics. Among the new products, traditional white has been replaced by a shade called cotton white RE. The shells, completely recyclable at the end of their life cycle, confirm Vitra’s commitment to sustainability and project a design classic into the future while maintaining its original spirit intact.
