Maxalto is the B&B Italia brand founded in 1975 by the famous architects Afra Bianchin and Tobia Scarpa who designed all its collections until 1992. Tobia Scarpa has transferred his artisan culture within the company dictating the lines of a modern and refined style of furniture, full of fine wooden furniture: individual pieces expertly handcrafted.

Maxalto's collections, the ones with a classic-modern taste made by Afra and Tobia Scarpa and the ones with a romantic and contemporary spirit made by Antonio Citterio, are united by the simplicity of the shapes and the strong material component. In the seventies, while the main trend in design was the exploration of the creative stylistic possibilities of the newest raw material, plastic, Afra and Tobia Scarpa moved against this way of thinking and choosed wood for almost all of their creations. A material design based on simple shapes perfectly created thanks to refined craftsmanship techniques. These shapes gave to wood a new, almost sculptural look.

With his eclectic genius and ability to synthesize design Tobia Scarpa - architect, designer, restorer – is one of Maxalto's main crown jewels and with his wife Afra Bianchin remains one of the leading exponents of Italian design. His talent has been awarded with numerous awards, such as the Compasso d'Oro in 1969 and the International Forum Design in 1992.

Antonio Citterio, an Italian designer famous all around the world and winner of two Compasso d’oro awards, one in 1987 with the Sity sofa system designed for B&B Italia, took over the artistic direction of Maxalto in 1993. The designer has interpreted the modern classicism of Afra Bianchin and Tobia Scarpa with a contemporary key, giving life to five new collections that tell the story of Italian good taste with objects and furnishing accessories full of charm and personality.
