The Research & Development center is the soul and beating heart of B&B Italia, a place where ideas are transformed into projects, thanks also to the collaboration with international designers who support and fuel the continuous experimentation process. Innovation of materials, technologies and processes, product design, retail design: every aspect is treated in detail. The result is a unique and distinctive lifestyle proposal that encloses a wide range of contemporary products in an overall stylistic coherence.

The most important architects and designers from all over the world have cooperated with B&B Italia: personalities such as Scarpa, Zanuso, Citterio, Nava, Bellini, Pesce, Chipperfield, Sottsass, Stark, Hadid and Urquiola. A collection of brilliant Design celebrities who, with their creations, have left their mark on the history of the company and have contributed to increasing its value over time.

B&B Italia received four “compasso d’oro”, including the most prestigious in 1989, "for the constant work carried out in order to combine the values of technical-scientific research with those necessary for the functionality and expressiveness of the products" while B&B Atoll - the new seating system designed by Antonio Citterio - received the EDIDA Germany 2018-2019 (Elle Decoration International Design Awards) for the "Best seating of the year" category.

Expressios of modern art

Gaetano Pesce, sculptor, architect and designer, created the Up seating collection for B&B Italia in the 60s that is still considered one of the greatest icons of beauty and innovation in the world of furniture. Composed of seven pieces, seven masterpieces in polyurethane foam, seven art objects with unusual shapes, colored and covered in elastic material. Among all its modules, the Up5 with its anthropomorphic configuration leads back to the female body. Its sinuous and abundant shapes recall in fact the venerable goddesses of fertility.

The Up5 is also the first industrial product of Italian design steeped with political meaning. The sphere linked to the main structure symbolizes the woman prisoner of male prejudices, victim of his violence and deprived of the same universal rights. In 2019 this armchair, that is an artwork , celebrated its "first" 50 years and for this reason a huge reproduction dominated Piazza Duomo in Milan for the whole duration of the Salone del Mobile.

The eclectic and innovative spirit of the company also characterizes B&B Italia Outdoor with the collections of three masters of international design. The first, Hybrid by Antonio Citterio, is a modular seating system with multiple configurations. The second, Ayana by Naoto Fukasawa, is composed of seats and tables with an oriental taste and nordic minimalist charm. The third "Oh, it's rain!" by Philippe Starck expresses the designer's extravagant spirit through a sofa and an armchair with unusual and fun shapes.

The Camaleonda modular sofa, designed 50 years ago by Mario Bellini, has recently been revisited in a contemporary key, maintaining the characteristics that have made it one of the main protagonists in the history of design.
